OH MY GOD YOU GUYS. I absolutely love anything with a nautical theme. Horatio Hornblower! Pirates of the Caribbean (Commodore Norrington, eeeee)! Even bloody sailor pants: I cannot get enough. I even have a subset of my tea tin collection dedicated solely to tins with ships on them. (This is an especially pretty one, btw.) So of course I had to join this challenge.

1. Read 10 nautical themed books in 2009.

3. Overlapping with other challenges is fine.
I’m definitely planning on finishing my Young Hornblower omnibus, and then moving on to the other books. I’ve also got a few books featuring pirates! Yay! I wonder if I can squeeze in the Temeraire books, too; Laurence used to be a Naval officer, plus in the book I’m reading now they’re going to be on a ship for a while. Hmmmm.

Oh man, I wish I had room for 20 more books. I love the Patrick O’Brian books. I’m about halfway through the series. Then I plan to start the Hornblowers from the beginning. I’ll be watching from the sidelines.

Oh, Master and Commander! I have yet to read any of those, though of course now I want to.
If you like Hornblower I’d heartily recommend the television adaptation with Ioan Gruffud as Hornblower– he is AWESOME, a really good fit, and the entire series is tremendously good.

Just read Victory by Susan Cooper which I will review on my blog soon. A very vivid look at the last ship of Lord Nelson at the Battle of Trafalgar. As expected from Cooper, another excellent adventure with an interesting twist.

Ooo, I saw that at the library! I love her Dark is Rising books, but I wasn’t sure to expect from her non-fantasy offerings and so didn’t pick it up. I’m glad you enjoyed it, though; maybe now I’ll have the courage to read it myself.
