Just finished reading this novel and I totally agree with you on almost all your points! Rose should be like-able but I didn't really care about her at all. Which really bothers me, since I'm a very character-driven reader.

I loved this book, and it does get better after reading it again. Have you read "Sun and Moon, Ice and Snow" by Jessica Day George? It is another version of the original fairy tale. But "East" is by far my favorite.

I read book earlier this year and loved it! It's one of the few books that I read in only one sitting this year.

Yeah, I totally would have tried to look the first night! On the other hand, in the frame of the fairy tale she needed not to have looked until after she fell in love(ish) with him, so I understand not looking until temptation was too much. I do think she acted like you would act if you knew you were in a fairy tale, as opposed to someone who just thought something weird was happening, if that makes sense.

I'd have looked! It was an unreasonable demand to make anyway. I remember thinking that when I read this fairy tale, and the same thing when I read Cupid and Psyche. With that one, I was just surprised she needed to be prompted by her ugly sisters. :P
